Cascalera Needs Help!

Cascalera consists of about 70 homes. In Brazil there is something called "invasion". What the poor people do is invade the land. They move onto it and set up their shanty homes. Sometimes they tap into electricity and water nearby. If the property owner has financial issues where taxes are not paid or is about to loose the land due to delinquent payments, the government allows the invadors to legally stay on the property. Eventually they have legal electricity and water connected and they start receiving bills. There are so many poor people in Brazil that for a lot of them this is a way of acquiring their home. Sueli, our housekeeper wanted to show us Cascalera. She also lives in another "invaded" area. She has worked very hard to improve her life. We want to help these people in Cascalera. Perhaps you will join us?

This is a typical home in Cascalera.

They need opportunities, they need a chance.

This grandmother wanted to show me her stove. It is next to her, it's a cinder block and a piece of metal.

She asked me for a used sheet for her bed. She lives with three little grandchildren.

Bare little feet. The children asked for flip flops. Also notebooks and pens for school.

It was fun to show digital pictures of the little girls of themselves. They wanted pictures taken over and over again of each other....they giggled a lot.

Sueli with some of the Cascalera children at a small center that a wonderful person is starting for the children. We donated powdered milk and bottled water. They need so much more.

Hi Jessica,
Thanks for your comment on my blog. I am so happy to discover your blog. This is an amazing post! It's so humbling how bright the human spirit can be, even with so little material wealth.

And then there are so many of us in the wealthy countries who don't have nearly as much vitality.

I would love to help these sweet people. What can I do?

:) Amey

Very touching indeed.

Makes us appreciate what we have here. When I hear people whining about our country, I feel they haven't seen much.

So why did you choose Brazil?

Thank you for dropping by my blog.

Hi Jessica! Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. Brazil seems like such an exotic place to those of us living so far away. It is shocking to find out the reality that some people live with there. What brought you to Brazil?

Jessica - You can set up a paypal button for donations on your blog....
I for one would be happy to send money to you for you to use as you see fit .

FRIDA did that on her blog for the Afghanistan children and it seemed to work really well.

I think it is wonderful that you are wanting to make life better .

Love, S.

i thought of setting up paypal for this...i was told that paypal takes quite a percentage of a fee for the withdrawal of the money. i want to be able to use 100% of the money for the cause. i am still looking into other means.

Jessica,

I read your post because africankelli mentioned you on her site. I am helping Kelli by donating newborn baby hats to her to take to the places she visits. Would you be interested in the same type of arrangement or is money easier so that you can use it where most needed? I would LOVE to help you where I can. I also crochet hair ribbons for girls - though not technically a 'need' the little girls love them and it makes them smile - which IS a need as I'm sure you know. Kathie

I often help by sending huge boxes of things to Brazil for a nominal fee. So many things that we Americans throw away are treasured. It's a great way to help. I'm happy to chat with you about this if you'd like to try it.

Oh my God! Poor kids and their parents! They live in so bad contitions! I don't think that Brazil property is so expensive! I think Brazilian Government must do something and give to that people opportunity to live normal life! Very touching blog.
